Description
The Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) is a small tree that grows broad and pyramidal and usually reaches a height of around 15 metres and a width of around 6 metres. Its needle-shaped leaves are dark green in colour. This tree tolerates frost well. It prefers acidic, loamy soil in a sunny to semi-shady position sheltered from the wind.

Growth
Japanese cedar is a small tree that grows broadly and pyramidally with a translucent crown. It usually reaches a height of 10 - 15 m and is approx. 4 - 6 m wide. As a rule, it grows 60 - 80 cm per year.

The plant needs plenty of water. Do not allow the soil to dry out.
Location
Preferred location in a sunny to semi-shady, wind-protected position.
Soil
Cryptomeria japonica thrives on all acidic, humus-rich and sufficiently moist soils.
Planting time
Container plants can be planted all year round, except when the ground is frozen and in summer heat (over 30°C).
Care
- This plant is susceptible to snow pressure. In snowy areas, it is therefore advisable to wrap the branches with twine. Otherwise, they may split apart and not fully recover. When the snow season is over, the twine must of course be removed.
- This plant should not be pruned. Only broken or diseased branches should be removed in summer.

Brown, conical cones. The young cones have a red-brown colour.
