Description
The Black elder (Sambucus nigra) is a broad, loose, large shrub that produces creamy white flowers arranged in umbrella clusters with a light fragrance. They appear from June to July. They produce black, round fruits from August. They exude a light fragrance. The Black elder also has pinnate, dark green leaves. Its bark is grey, corky and longitudinally furrowed. In a sunny to semi-shady location with humusy, calcareous, loamy soil, it usually reaches a height of around 7 metres and grows to a width of around 5 metres.
